Experts from the United States visit YSFRI

On July 26, Prof. Mohamed Faisal from Michigan State University and Associate Professor Li Jun from Lake Superior State University in America visited the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (YSFRI). More than 40 people include researchers and post-graduates attended the meeting that was presided over by deputy director Zhang Qingli from the Division of Maricultural Organism Disease Control and Molecular Pathology (hereinafter referred to as "Division of Disease Research").

At the meeting, Prof. Mohamed Faisal gave a lecture entitled"Fish Health Issues at the Laurentian Great Lakes", elaborated the important and emerging diseases that are threatening the aquatic health in the Great Lakes of North America, and their pathological features, incidence, and prevention and control measures, and then shared the experiences of effective prevention and control of the disease in the course of artificial seed breeding and artificial releasing in the Great Lakes region as well. Associate Professor Li Jun gave a lecture entitled"Vaccination of silver sea bream against Vibrio alginolyticus", introducing the major aquatic animal diseases named asVibrio alginolyticusand its immunization technology,and analyzing the mechanism that pathogen inactivated vaccine was immune to silver bream.Those two reports aroused strong interest among the participants and inspired heated discussions.

After the meeting, Prof. Mohamed Faisal and Li Jun paid a visit to the Division of Diseases Research. Both of them exchanged their views on strengthening the cooperation in the field of aquatic animal health and developing new diagnostic techniques for pathogens. Afterwards, Prof. Li Jun listened to the implementation of the National Natural Science Foundation Project that was implemented in cooperation with YSFRI, and then put forward thoughtful comments on the next research plan and work program.

Dr. Mohamed Faisal, currently a professor at Michigan State University, was asenior fellow at the German Academic Exchange Center (1986), a professor at William and Mary College (1996-2001), a consultant of the United Nations Secretary-General (1993-now) and the President of the World Association of Aquatic Veterinary Medicine (2013), and also the world's well-known experts in this field. Dr. Li Jun, is an Associate Professor at Lake Superior State University in the United States and the Director of the Joint Laboratory of Fish Disease at Lake Superior State University and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (MDNR). He has been committed to the diagnosis and defense research on bacterial and viral infectious diseases of fish, has published more than 40 articles in Nature Immunology, PNAS and other international well-known publications, and has made a wealth of leading innovative S&T achievements.

YSFRI has maintained good cooperation with the Michigan State University and Lake Superior State University, including exchange visits, joint research projects and other activities. Those two experts’ visit will further deepen cooperation between YSFRI and the two universities in the field of fisheries health, which also help improve the international influence of YSFRI in this field.
